Let them eat cake.

I was recently asked if I would like to take part in Moneysupermarket's 'What's in your pocket?' blogger challenge, a fun little concept where bloggers are given £20 to spend on something to make them feel good. Being the foodie that I am, I decided to use my £20 to put together a contemporary, budget version of my favourite scene from Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.

A fair amount of imagination was involved in making my dream tea party a reality. If I was going to be true to Marie Antoinette, I needed macarons and delicate drinks and desserts piled high with whipped cream, however with a limited budget I was going to have to roll up my sleeves and get baking.

My lovely friend Georgie joined me on a trip to the shops where we picked up ground almonds, punnets of fresh fruit, cream, white chocolate, flowers, rose water, chocolate seashells and sparklinrosé. Back at the flat we whipped up some macarons, loaded meringues with cream and fruit and dipped strawberries in chocolate. After a couple of hours of preparation, we got stuck into our luxury spread.

It was a really novel was to spend an afternoon, especially for two students who are usually counting their pennies. It was a real treat to have £20 to fritter away on whatever took our fancy, and whilst fancy pâtisserie treats may have been out of our price range, our budget, homemade versions were just as tasty (and we had enough change left over for something fizzy!). It was girly, self-indulgence at it's best, and the hard work that went into putting it together made the end result all the sweeter.

  18. I love making cakes! I used to do it all the time at home and presentation was everything to me, but now I'm at uni I just never seem to get round to it.....probably has something to do with the fact our kitchen is tiny and a tad grotty! Haha hopefully when we move this year I'll end up with a kitchen I can actually bake in! Yours look absolutely delightful!
